National Society of Accountants to Hold Convention in Reno, Aug. 21-24, 2017

The National Society of Accountants (NSA) 72nd Annual Convention will be held August 21-24, 2017 at the Nugget Casino Resort in Reno, NV.

The meeting will draw accountants and tax professionals from across North America. Attendees can earn up to 16 hours of continuing professional education (CPE) and many other convention activities provide numerous networking opportunities. The early registration discount deadline is coming up on July 8.

The Annual Convention is the cornerstone of several tax and accounting-related events sponsored by NSA that week, including a preconference Enrolled Agent (EA) Exam Review Course August 20-22, accounting classes, and a Tax Planning Bootcamp August 23-24 including ethics.

Day one (August 20) of the EA Exam Review Course also serves as a review course for those interested in becoming an Accredited Tax Preparer (ATP), a credential offered by the Accreditation Council for Accountancy and Taxation for practitioners who have thorough knowledge of the existing tax code and the preparation of individual tax returns. The ATP exam can be taken on August 21. Accredited Tax Preparers have exempt status in the IRS Annual Filing Season (AFSP) program.

“This will be a highly educational week of the year for any accounting and tax professional looking to advance their professional knowledge and credentials,” says NSA Executive Vice President John Ams.
The convention kicks off on the evening of Monday, August 21 with an Opening Reception. NSA Business Sessions and the Awards Luncheon will take place on Tuesday, August 22.

Annual Convention speakers and courses include:

  • Bill Leonard CPA, CFFA, owner of W.A. Leonard & Company, P.C. and TaxSpeaker presenter, will lead four one-hour sessions on the morning of August 23 on Current Issues in Accounting Fraud, Fiduciary Accounting and Form 1041, Statement of Cash Flows, and Trends in Peer Review. CPE: 2 Hours/Accounting & Tax; 2 Hours/Accounting.
  • Beanna J. Whitlock, EA, CSA, owner of Whitlock Tax Service, LLC, will present “Where Do You Keep Your Ethics? Ethics for the 21st Century Tax Professional” on August 24. Whitlock teaches Ethics and Professional Conduct before many professional groups and for the IRS. She also served as Director of National Public Liaison for the Internal Revenue Service in 2003 and 2004, responsible for IRS Commissioner relations with tax professionals, state and local governments and Congress. CPE: 2 Hours/Ethics.
  • John O. Everett, CPA, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA; Bill Duncan, CPA, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Accounting at Arizona State University; Jo; and former IRS Revenue Agent Cherie Henning, CPA, PhD, an accomplished teacher and author in tax and accounting issues, will lead the Tax Planning Bootcamp, a two-day seminar that will examine various federal tax planning strategies, including six broad planning topic areas: Gift and Estate Taxation, Choice of Business Entity, Retirement Planning, Flow-Through Entities, and Corporate and Business Taxation. CPE: 14 Hours/Tax.

Everett and Duncan will also teach the EA Exam Review Course and the ATP Exam Review Course.
NSA is approved as an official provider of CPE by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Accreditation Council for Accountancy & Taxation (ACAT) and California Tax Education Council (CTEC).

The Annual Convention offers many networking opportunities and social events, beginning with the Welcome Reception on August 21, an evening at the National Automobile Museum – one of America’s five greatest automobile museums – on August 22, and concluding with the Installation Banquet on August 24.

Full conference registration packages are available for $579 for NSA members and $725 for nonmembers (including a full year of NSA membership) until July 8, 2017. After that date, member registration is $679 and nonmember registration is $825.

The hotel room rate is $69 plus a $10 resort fee per night and the reservation deadline for this rate is July 21, 2017.
