The deadline for most Americans to file their federal tax returns in 2022 is April 18, instead of the usual April 15 date. This is because of a holiday recognized in the nation’s capital. Most states that have their own income tax reporting requirements try to make the deadline the same, but it often takes legislation to make that change.
So far, most states have gotten on the April 18 bandwagon, but a few states have different deadlines. Here are the most recent 2022 filing deadlines for all states that have an income tax for individuals:

The reason the deadline has been moved from April 15 this year is because Emancipation Day is a holiday recognized on April 16 each year by the city of Washington, D.C. When the date falls on a Saturday, it is recognized on Friday, and city and federal offices close. When the day falls on a Sunday, the holiday is recognized on the Monday after. In 2022, April 16 falls on a Saturday, so IRS and other offices will be closed on Friday, April 15. As a result, the federal deadline for reporting income tax will be Monday, April 18, 2022.
* Note 1: Delaware’s traditional individual due date is April 30, which falls on a Saturday this year.
* Note 2: Virginia’s traditional individual due date is May 1, which fall son a Sunday this year.
* Note 3: Maine and Massachusetts recognize Patriots’ Day on April 18, resulting in an April 19 deadline this year.
