Beth Wood is a long-time public servant with 15 years of auditing experience. Beth served in the State Auditor’s Office for more than a decade and previously served in the State Treasurer’s Office. She is the first woman elected to the position of State Auditor in North Carolina.

During her tenure in the State Auditor’s Office, Beth was instrumental in bringing the state’s compliance supplements up to federal standards, ensuring that federal grants are being used as intended. She was a leader in redesigning the Auditor’s Office training program to make training more relevant to state auditors’ work. And she helped develop employee evaluations that better reflected the job performance of Auditor’s Office employees.

After leaving the State Auditor’s Office in 2007, she taught a variety of professional courses for the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants (NCACPA). She serves on the AICPA Steering Committee for its annual Government and Not for Profit Conference.

Beth grew up on her family’s farm near Cove City in eastern North Carolina. That’s where she says she learned to value every dime. It’s that sense of fiscal responsibility that has led her to seek the office of State Auditor. Beth put herself through school and received her accounting degree from East Carolina University in 1984. She became a Certified Public Accountant in 1987.

Beth is committed to returning the State Auditor’s Office to its former high standards. Her only priority will be to monitor the state’s use of taxpayer money. She will be the people’s full-time financial watchdog.

Family is a cornerstone for Beth. When she’s not working or teaching, you’ll find her with one of her dozen nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces. She loves to cook. Her signature dish is country style steak and she claims to be the only member of her family who can get her grandmother’s gravy recipe just right.
