Indiana Certified Public Accountant (CPA) James L. Brown has been named the winner of this year’s Sustained Contribution Award by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA). The award recognizes members who have contributed measurably to the AICPA and accounting profession with a long and exemplary record of volunteer service.

Brown, a partner at Crowe Horwath before his retirement in 2009, served on four AICPA senior technical committees, including the Auditing Standards Board, the Accounting Standards Executive Committee, the CPA Examination Board of Examiners, and the SEC Practice Section/Center for Public Company Audit Firms Executive Committee. He also served on or chaired over 20 AICPA task forces and subcommittees, which covered a wide range of matters such as computerizing the CPA exam, codifying auditing standards, internal-use software, auditor independence, reporting on internal control, and other topics.

“Volunteers are a critical component of the AICPA and we salute all CPAs who take time out of their busy schedules to give back to the profession,” said James Curry, CPA, chair of the AICPA’s awards committee. “But there are some candidates, such as Jim Brown, who deserve special recognition for efforts over many years. Such continued commitment to the profession goes above and beyond the usual definition of service. That’s the guiding principle behind the Sustained Contribution Award.”

Besides his AICPA contributions, Brown served on five Financial Accounting Standards Board groups, including its Financial Accounting Standards Advisory Council. At Crowe Horwath, he served as an audit partner, specializing in financial institutions and public companies, and also headed Crowe’s professional standards group for 17 years. In addition, he chaired the Horwath International Accounting and Auditing Committee for five years.

Brown is a summa cum laude graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He lives in Granger, Ind.
