Q&A:

Aside from the accounting websites, which blog/website do you consider a must-read?

I spend a lot of time doing research related to my profession. When I get time to relax and read something for enjoyment, I typically like to read sports related blogs. In particular, I like the Monday Morning Quarterback blog.

In what ways have you contributed to your firm/company to make it better?

From early on, I took a leadership role within my department and strove to improve our processes and knowledge base. Over the years, I have trained additional staff and continue to push them to learn more and to be excited by the prospect of new opportunities for the firm.

In what ways do you participate in the professional community to change/improve the accounting profession?

I have taken over the role of President for the Maryland and DC chapter of the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts. Additionally, I have written numerous articles and taught courses related to my field to other accounting professionals. I enjoy teaching new concepts to other professionals and if nothing exists, I try to find a way to provide it.

In what ways do you participate in your local community to help others?

I try to get involved with organizations that have influenced me over the years. I currently teach at Stevenson University in its Graduate Forensic Studies program and am also a member of their alumni board and provide mentoring assistance to future accountants. I am also on the University of Baltimore Accounting Advisory Board and help to develop their accounting programs and experience for accounting students.

What changes do you foresee in the accounting profession of the near future (3-5 years)?

There will be a large shift with the retirement of current partners throughout the industry and it is dependent on the next generation to step up and provide the necessary knowledge and services so there isn’t a gap during this transition period. It will be an exciting change, but also one that will require dedication from young professionals.

How do you see yourself participating in shaping the future of the accounting profession?

I hope to continue to teach and be a thought leader as my profession continues to develop. There is always more to learn and sharing new knowledge is just as important and discovering it.

What is your career philosophy?

My general philosophy is to work hard, treat your staff and colleagues well, and take the time to enjoy the journey. We will all be working for a long time and it is imperative to take care of those you interact with and also to enjoy yourself. In the end, you want to be able to look back and be proud of what you accomplished.

Describe one person who has been an important mentor to you and how that person helped change your life.

One of my instructors in college took the time to sit with me and help me understand where I wanted to go with my career. This included the possible avenues to take and how I could potentially get there. Although I have made many changes from that point in time, it was invaluable to realize that there is so much more available than what you think you know as a college student. This not only helped me with my career, but it instilled in me the desire to want to help others expand their horizons and understand that they can do whatever they want to do with some proper planning.
