The American Institute of CPAs has awarded four college students its 2016-2017 AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship award. The award is part of the AICPA’s Legacy Scholars program.

The undergraduate and graduate-level accounting students, planning to pursue their CPA license, are chosen from more than 1,000 applicants. The selected students demonstrate academic excellence and outstanding leadership skills. Each recipient will receive a $10,000 scholarship award for the 2016-2017 academic year.

“These outstanding students have demonstrated the leadership skills and commitment necessary to thrive in the accounting profession,” said Joanne Fiore, AICPA vice president of professional media, academics and student engagement. “The AICPA is proud to support these talented students’ education and help them along their path to becoming CPAs.”

The four 2016-2017 AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship award recipients are listed in alphabetic order below:

  • Austin Moss, The University of Iowa
  • Floricel Castanaeda, Southern Methodist University
  • Jonathan Peck, University of Michigan
  • Payton Sartin, Wake Forest University

The AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship award is one of four scholarships available through the AICPA Legacy Scholars Program, created in 2011. The recipients will receive a one-year AICPA scholarship and the opportunity to develop the skills needed for a successful career through service. They will be required to complete at least eight hours of service each semester by planning and implementing events on campus that advocate the accounting profession.

The AICPA Legacy Scholars program will provide more than 100 scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year, totaling more than $630,000 for students across the nation. AICPA Legacy Scholars are Student Affiliate Members of the AICPA, which is a free-membership option available to college students. Each AICPA Legacy Scholar is given access to a coach who provides mentoring for the student’s service events and guidance in relation to the profession.

“Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients, who have demonstrated excellence inside and outside the classroom and a commitment to the accounting profession,” said Andrew Denka, executive vice president of professional staffing services for Robert Half, parent company of Accountemps. “We are pleased to join the AICPA in honoring these outstanding students and recognizing their achievements.”

Each eligible AICPA Legacy Scholarship applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and completed at least 30 semester hours in college-level coursework, including six semester hours in accounting. A task force comprised of AICPA Student Recruitment Committee members, CPA volunteers and Accountemps staff selected the recipients based on academic achievement; demonstration of leadership and volunteerism; and overall commitment to becoming a licensed CPA.

The application deadline for the 2017-2018 AICPA Legacy Scholarship is April 1, 2017. More information about the Legacy Scholars Program and other scholarship awards offered to accounting students is available online.
