From the 2017 review of professional payroll systems.
Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting’s Payroll is designed for smaller accounting firms that offer or wish to offer payroll and related services to their clients. Designed to integrate with both ATX and TaxWise, Payroll can be installed as a desktop product or on a server. Payroll can also be utilized as a stand-alone payroll product, but those using other Wolters Kluwer products will experience greater product functionality. Payroll, like other Wolters Kluwer applications, is only available to professional accountants.
Wolters Kluwer’s Payroll contains an easy-to-use interface and accountants can easily access all of their clients from a single screen. Payroll supports an unlimited number of payroll clients, as well as an unlimited number of employees per client. An express setup feature is included in the product, which helps to streamline employee setup.
Payroll offers tax tables for all 50 states, as well as all federal entities. The product can also support local taxes as well, though those fields will need to be maintained by the user. Reporting options are standard in Payroll, with filters offered for creating a more custom report, though genuine customization capability is not offered. Product users do have the option to export all reports to Excel if further customization is necessary. Reports can also be saved as a PDF if desired.
Users can import time data from other Wolters Kluwer products such as ProSystem fx, or from other third-party timekeeping applications using a text file. Federal tax forms such as forms 940 and 941 are generated in Payroll, though users will need to use either Wolters Kluwer’s W-2/1099 or Payroll Compliance Reporting in order to file the compliance forms electronically. Users can choose to print forms on paper and file them with the appropriate agency, if desired. Both W-2s and 1099s can be processed in Payroll, and users can also file W-3 compliance forms electronically with the Social Security Administration.
Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting offers seamless integration with other Wolters Kluwer applications, including the robust Client Accounting Suite, which offers GL, Trial Balance, After-the-Fact Payroll, AP, and AR capability. Use of the payroll application with the accounting suite also offers complete integration with ProSystem fx Practice Management. The product offers limited integration with other third party applications outside of Wolters Kluwer products, though users can convert existing client data from QuickBooks, Sage 50, and other accounting applications using the conversion utility that is included in the product. Payroll does not offer a client/employee portal in the product, and there is currently to HR tools available to utilize.
Payroll contains excellent help functionality within the application. There are also a variety of tutorials that are available to new users, as well as access to the ATX/TaxWise Solution Center, which offers a variety of help and support functions including a Knowledge Library, blogs, and new user orientation. The Education Libraries feature a variety of short instructional videos for users to access when needed. Wolters Kluwer applications also offer unlimited telephone, fax, email and online support options, with the cost included in the licensing fees. There are also a variety of webinars and other training options available from Wolters Kluwer at an additional cost.
Payroll from Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting is a solid payroll application that can be used as a stand-alone product or in conjunction with Wolters Kluwer’s Client Accounting Suite for even more functionality. Both Payroll and Client Accounting Suite with Payroll are priced separately, with pricing available directly from Wolters Kluwer.
