The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) is has announced the recipients of the 2017-2018 AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship. The one-year $5,000 scholarship, part of the AICPA’s Legacy Scholars Program, is awarded to students who come from liberal arts or non-traditional business backgrounds and are now pursuing graduate accounting degrees and working towards their CPA licensure.
“The backgrounds of this year’s John L. Carey Scholarship recipients highlight that there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ pathway to enter the accounting profession and earn your CPA license,” said AICPA Foundation President and former AICPA Chairman of the Board Randy Fletchall. “The unique perspectives these future CPAs have as a result of their non-traditional educational path to the profession will serve them well in the future.”
The 2017-2018 recipients are:
- Christopher Broughton, Harvard University
- Christian Kohlmann, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Kevin Millian, Rutgers University – Newark
- Madeline Porter, The University of California, Davis
- Tom Tamir, The University of Texas at Austin
Each student received a $5,000 scholarship to help cover tuition and other educational expenses. The scholarship is funded by a contribution from John L. Carey, who retired from the AICPA in 1969 after an illustrious 40-year career with the Institute. Carey served as administrative vice president, executive director, editor and publisher of the Journal of Accountancy. Carey, a career CPA and university professor, was known for encouraging outstanding students from all backgrounds to become CPAs.
The John L. Carey Scholarship Award is one of four scholarship awards made available through the AICPA Legacy program. The 2017-2018 Legacy Scholars Awards provided a total of more than $630,000 for 123 deserving accounting students. AICPA Legacy Scholars are Student Affiliate Members of the AICPA, which is a free-membership option offered to all college students. Legacy Scholars have access to a coach who mentors them, providing them with direction and guidance along their path to becoming a licensed CPA.
Applications are reviewed by a task force comprised of AICPA Student Recruitment Committee members and CPA volunteers who consider academic achievement, leadership and overall commitment to pursuing a CPA license. Applicants must be full-time graduate-level students for the next academic year with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and have not earned more than 12 credits in accounting or business during their undergraduate program.
The application deadline for the 2018-2019 AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship Award is March 1, 2018. More information about the Legacy Scholars Program and other scholarships offered to accounting students is available online at ThisWaytoCPA.com.
