May marks the light at the end of the tunnel as tax season comes to a close. Undoubtedly, you and your colleagues have braved a lot of grueling tasks and demanding work hours, but now you can breathe a sigh of relief as intense work days begin to subside. During tax season, there were many tasks you had to tackle to perform your best. But there’s one more thing you’ll need to do to ensure you approach the remaining year head-on — taking time to personally recharge after the busy season.

Here are four ways to practice self care to help you thrive the rest of the year.

Focus on career development.

You’ve conquered the mountain that is tax season. Now, it’s time to tackle your next challenge — advancing your career. Once tax season’s over and your schedule’s less demanding, make time to tackle the continuing professional education (CPE) requirements that can position you for professional development.

Review and set goals.

One of the best ways to advance your career is by reflecting on your performance this past tax season. Reviewing what you did well, as well as where you struggled, can help you identify areas for improvement. This will go a long way toward making next year’s tax season a success.

Get physically active.

The past few months have kept you chained to your desk. Now that your schedule’s not so hectic, make time to get physically active. Whether it’s playing sports, taking a walk at lunch or just doing yard work on the weekends, you’ll feel the benefits in both your personal and working life. According to Livestrong, exercise can boost productivity through heightened energy and alertness. Additionally, physical activity can improve stress management and help combat anxiety and depression. In short, it’s an easy and fun way to boost your mental health.

Relax and regroup.

The long work days and demanding schedules of tax season typically create a lot of stress. It’s important to recharge after the busy tax season, as stress is the third-highest reason employees want to leave their current positions. Many accountants use the first weekend after tax season to catch up on some much-needed sleep. Others take the opportunity to book a vacation to let loose and unwind. No matter how you decompress, take a moment for yourself to catch up on a little relaxation — you deserve it!

There’s a reason why you chose accounting as your profession, and you can use this time to fall back in love with your craft. There’s a lot to look back on, whether it’s reflecting on the client relationships you’ve developed or priding yourself on skill sets you’ve obtained. So, applaud yourself for a job well done this tax season, unwind for your own sake and remind yourself of the passion you have for this role. It’ll help you tackle the rest of year with your best foot forward.
