40 Under 40 Fun Facts

Innovation is his middle name…

Well, actually it’s Jason Blumer’s middle title. He is the Chief Innovation Officer for Blumer & Associates, CPAs, PC.

The iPhones have it.

More of this year’s 40 Under 40 Honorees use iPhones (17) than any other brand. BlackBerrys are second in popularity with 13. The new Android platform is catching on quickly though, with several of our 40 using such smartphones from HTC and Motorola. Honorees Joe Harpaz and Jennifer Warawa have both an iPhone and BlackBerry.

California Dreaming

With nine Honorees calling California home, the Golden State led all others this year. Five are from Illinois and four from Georgia. Out of 18 states represented, only five are west of the Mississippi.

Seeing Double

All but three of our Honorees have multi-screen monitors at their workstations, with the majority having two screens. A few had three or four, but alone at the top was Robert Chandler with a five-screen setup.

Apple Admiration

Asked which company (aside from their own) that they respect most, more professionals chose Apple, with Google, Zappos and RootWorks following. Although an individual (and one of our columnists), Rene Lacerte was also cited. Lacerte was the founder of Bill.com and PayCycle.

The Title Goes To…

Among this year’s 40 Under 40 Honorees, Jason Conger has the most acronyms after his name. CTP, CCEA, MCP, CCNA and CNE. He is Director of Technology for Xcentric.

Three Under 30

Our youngest Honorees for 2010 include Michael Hsu, 26; Kimberly Hogan, 27; and Shane Eloe, 28.

Just the Apps

Our 40 Under 40 Honorees are often mobile, so it makes sense that the most cited smartphone applications were map apps. Honoree Ryan McCowan has even created an iPhone app for tax and accounting professionals called CPA Xpress (www.cpaxpress.net).

Socially Interactive

All of our 40 Under 40 Honorees cite using social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Active Lifestyles

The most frequently cited activity was spending time with family, with many of the same Honorees also enjoying outdoor sports such as golf, biking, skiing and snowboarding. Reading is also a popular hobby with this group.

More Apple Tech

Although the question wasn’t directly asked, at least five of this year’s 40 Under 40 Honorees are iPad users. Of course, with her name you might expect that Teresa Mackintosh would be an Apple fan.

Extreme Activities

Honoree BJ Schaknowski competes in Ironman triathlons, marathons and ultra-marathons. Honoree Brian Fox also does triathlons, plus “high adventure” sports like shark diving, sky diving, bull riding, alligator wrestling and mountain climbing.
