What is your favorite part of being a member of the accounting profession?

Danielle Supkis Cheek CPA

Flexibility!

This manifests in several ways, from the variety of career paths available to the adaptability of work environments and schedules. This allows those in the profession to have a career that is sustainable, continually engaging, and ever-changing.

How have you personally seen the roles of women evolve in the accounting profession?

The industry has seen a cultural shift towards more flexible work arrangements, which has been particularly beneficial for women balancing professional and personal responsibilities. Hopefully, this change will help retain talented women and attract new entrants to the profession, ensuring a more diverse and dynamic future for accounting. Understanding and addressing the unique needs of both men and women in the profession is crucial for the promotion of gender equality.

What do you anticipate will be the biggest change in the accounting profession in the next 10 years?

Undoubtedly it will be how we adapt to change itself, in a very meta sense. Traditionally, due to the need for precision and certainty, the accounting profession has been cautious about change, ensuring that new approaches are as good as, if not better than, previous methods. However, the pace at which new approaches are improving is accelerating exponentially. I believe the biggest change will be less about procedural updates and more about how accountants approach the concept of change itself.

What is your favorite professional mobile app, and why?

Outlook and Slack provide numerous features, all at my fingertips, with user-friendly interfaces. I can access my emails and messages on the go and can discuss, collaborate, and brainstorm with colleagues wherever I happen to be.

What are your favorite podcasts?

I love ‘What’s Your And?’ hosted by John Garrett.

It explores how embracing the whole person fuels creativity, connection, and performance at work. It challenges traditional views of professionalism and I love hearing about the amazing activities people engage in outside the workplace and how this fuels and inform their professional lives.

What books have you read recently that you would like to recommend?

Atomic Habits by James Clear

It is rare to find a book that offers easily applicable insights, is enjoyable to read and also impacts so many aspects of life.
