In 2025, more than 20 states will see minimum wage increases for hourly workers, though the federal minimum wage will remain $7.25—the same its been since 2009.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, although most states have adopted minimum wage requirements higher than the federal minimum, five have not: Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Of the 21 states seeing a boost in hourly minimum wage requirements, Massachusetts is not one of them.
The last minimum wage increase for Bay Stater’s was in January of 2023, which bumped the hourly wage to $15 an hour and the service rate to $6.75 an hour for tipped workers who provide services to customers.
While Massachusetts will not see an increase in 2025, four of New England’s six states will: Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
Minimum wage increases in 2025:
Alaska
Alaska’s minimum wage will increase from $11.73 to $11.91 in 2025, according to Alaska’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development Labor Standards and Safety Division.
Arizona
Arizona’s minimum wage will increase to $14.70 in 2025, up from 2024’s minimum of $14.35 per hour, Azcenteral.com reported.
California
The Golden State will see a minimum wage increase from $16 to $16.50 in 2025, according to the California Labor and Employment Law Blog.
Colorado
Colorado’s minimum wage will increase from $14.42 to $14.81 effective Jan. 1.
Connecticut
Minimum wage workers in Connecticut will see a pay increase of 66 cents starting Jan. 1, 2025.
The new minimum wage for the state starting in 2025 will be $16.35 compared to 2024’s hourly rate of $15.69, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont said in a release.
Delaware
Delaware’s minimum wage will increase to $15 an hour in 2025, up from the state’s minimum wage of $13.25 in 2024, according to Delaware’s Department of Labor.
Illinois
Minimum wage in Illinois will increase to $15 an hour, Jan. 1, 2025. The increase bumps the state’s current minimum wage of $14 an hour by $1, according to the Illinois Department of Labor.
Maine
Minimum wage in Maine will increase from $14.15 to $14.65 an hour in 2025, based on data from the U. S Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Michigan
Michigan’s state minimum wage will increase from $10.33 to $10.56 per hour effective Jan. 1.
Minnesota
Minnesota’s state minimum wage will increase to $11.13 an hour in 2025.
Missouri
Minimum wage will increase in Missouri to $13.75, Jan. 1. It is a jump from the 2024 minimum of $12.30 hourly rate.
Montana
Minimum wage will increase in Montana to $10.55 from $10.33 in 2025, according to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry Employment Standards Standards Division.
Nebraska
Nebraska’s minimum wage will increase from $12 to $13.50, Jan. 1.
New Jersey
New Jersey’s minimum wage will increase to $15.49 from $15.13, effective Jan. 1.
New York
Minimum wage will increase in New York to $16.50 an hour in 2025 up from $15.50, according to the state’s Department of Labor.
Ohio
Ohio’s minimum wage will increase to $10.70 an hour from $10.45 an hour starting Jan. 1 the state Department of Commerce stated in a release.
Rhode Island
Minimum wage will increase in Rhode Island from $14 an hour to $15 an hour, according to the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.
South Dakota
South Dakota’s minimum wage will increase to $11.50 from $11.20 in 2025, based on inflation and Consumer Price Index data, according to the South Dakota Department of Labor.
Virginia
Minimum wage will increase in Virginia to $12.41 from $12, Jan. 1. The increase is based on inflation and Consumer Price Index data, Virginia’s Department of Labor and Industry said in a statement.
Vermont
Vermont’s minimum wage will increase to $14.01 an hour from $13.67, Jan. 1, the state’s Department of Labor stated in a release.
Washington
Minimum wage in Washington will increase to $16.66 from $16.28 in 2025, according to the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.
