The Internal Revenue Service says the average tax refund so far in 2025 is up more than 18% for the first two weeks of tax season.

Data released Friday by the IRS shows the average refund is coming in at $2.065, up from $1,741 in 2024. Taxpayers electing to receive their money as a direct deposit are averaging a refund of $2,165, an 18% increase from the $1,831 average in 2024.

Although those numbers are great for Americans expecting a tax refund, the IRS says that as more tax returns are processed, the average refund amount will fluctuate.

It’s also worth noting that the IRS cannot distribute refunds to those who claim the Additional Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit until mid-February. A federal law prevents the payments from going on before that time.

The IRS expects those who’ve already filed and claimed the credit to be able to check the status of their refund by Feb. 22. Those taxpayers should receive their refund by March 3.

Although average refunds are up, the number of returns being filed and processed are down by about 7%. The agency began accepting returns on Jan. 27 and thus far has received 23.5 million returns. Of those, only about 70,000 of them haven’t been processed for payment.
