With the passing of former James Earl Carter, the 39th President of the United States, many official government offices are closed on January 9, 2025, as his funeral is held at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Carter was honored earlier this week with period of lying in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
President Joe Biden has declared January 9, 2025, as a National Day of Mourning. As such, most non-essential government offices will be closed. Additionally, U.S. stock markets will halt trading, but banks and most private businesses and stores will remain open. The IRS has noted that tax payments due on January 9 will be granted an extra day due to the day of mourning.
The son of a farmer and a nurse, President Carter’s career in public service began in 1943 as a cadet at the United States Naval Academy. He later served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets before becoming a decorated lieutenant and being selected to join the elite nuclear submarine program. After military service, he would become governor of Georgia and then President of the United States. After his time in office, Carter was well-known for his dedication to church service and his philanthropic work, most notably with Habitat for Humanity, where he helped build homes for the less fortunate. He was also an active proponent for international peace policies.
The last national day of mourning was observed for the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, who passed away in 2018. The tradition has been held for presidents since the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, but has also been observed for national tragedies, as well as for the passing of other nationally respected leaders, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
