Where Do I Belong? Fostering Connection in an Ever-Changing World

Don’t let another year go by feeling like you’re “on the outside.” Take the first step toward belonging—and watch how it transforms everything.

Let’s face it: no matter how much the world changes, we all return to one fundamental question—Do I fit in?

This question, whispered in the quiet moments of doubt, is universal. According to Gallup’s 2024 State of the Global Workplace report, one in five employees worldwide feels lonely at work. This isn’t just about remote work or a passing trend. It’s a deeply human challenge. And for accountants, working in an industry defined by precision, rules, and data, loneliness can feel especially acute.

But here’s the truth: even in a world where algorithms predict outcomes and AI crunches numbers, our greatest need remains connection. As the year turns over, let’s pause. Let’s reflect on what it means to belong in a profession—and in a world—that’s evolving faster than ever.

Belonging: It’s More Than Fitting In

“I remember early in my career, the dread I would fill when I pulled into the firm’s parking lot for another day of work, fearing the loneliness of not feeling like I fit in.  Thinking do matter?  I would ask myself, ‘Is this it?  Is this professional accounting? Is this what belonging looks like?’ Eventually, I realized something was missing—not just for me, but many others as well.  A sense of fitting in.”

True belonging isn’t about blending in or conforming. It’s about embracing who you are and recognizing your unique value. As Brené Brown writes in Braving the Wilderness, belonging requires authenticity—a willingness to stand alone when necessary, to uphold your values even when it’s uncomfortable.

For accountants, the challenge is daunting. We’ve built careers around rules, regulations, and results. But belonging demands a different skillset: courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to explore the “why” behind our work.

Ask yourself:

  • What makes you more than a number cruncher?
  • How do your life experiences shape your professional perspective?

Maybe it’s your small-town upbringing that gives you an edge in understanding local businesses. Perhaps it’s the tenacity you learned from starting over after failure. Whatever it is, it’s worth bringing to the forefront.

The Emotional Landscape of Loneliness

Loneliness at work isn’t just a fleeting emotion—it’s a deep, gnawing ache. It’s the silence after a meeting ends without anyone asking for your opinion. It’s the absence of connection after weeks of grinding through tax season.

Gallup’s report underscores that loneliness isn’t confined to fully remote or hybrid work setups. Even in fully in-person environments, 47% of highly lonely employees’ interactions occur face-to-face. The setting doesn’t automatically guarantee connection.

What does? Vulnerability and intention.

Courage in Connection

Loneliness often stems from feeling misunderstood. In the world, this translates to a fear of being seen as “too different.” But in reality, your difference is your strength and maybe not that uncommon.

One of my hobbies outside of work has always been running and I always felt like no one else in the office shared this love.  That idea was shattered one day when I was lining up to start a 10k running race and was shocked to see one of the partners in the accounting firm next to me.  I always thought I was alone, but that belief was challenged by the person I was talking, definitely not dressed for the office standing next to me.

Courage in connection isn’t about oversharing—it’s about authenticity. The next time you’re in a meeting with a co-worker, try this:

  • Be open about your life outside the office.
  • Acknowledge the humanity in the room—whether it’s a shared laugh over coffee or a sincere question during a busy season.

Belonging Through Empathy and Innovation

Loneliness isn’t just a personal problem—it’s an organizational challenge. If you’re in a leadership role, you hold the power to foster belonging within your team.

  1. Create Slack in the Workflow: Connection requires time. Build in space for spontaneous conversations, team lunches, or even a simple “how’s your day going?” Gallup reports that employees who feel their managers support social relationships are far less likely to experience workplace loneliness.
  2. Build Rituals of Connection: Borrow from research that suggests consistent, intentional social opportunities—like starting meetings with personal check-ins or celebrating small wins—are critical for fostering trust.
  3. Empathize Beyond the Office: Not all connection happens face-to-face. Virtual coffee chats, Slack channels for casual conversation, or even a quick check-in email can bridge the gap for remote and hybrid employees.

Your Place in the World

In a time of rapid technological change and professional evolution, finding belonging might seem elusive. But it starts with small steps:

  • Choosing to connect authentically.
  • Encouraging those around you to do the same.
  • Cultivating the courage to embrace both who you are and where you’re going.

As accountants, we pride ourselves on solving problems and creating order. What if we applied that same rigor to fostering connection?

Imagine an industry where employees are more than their billable hours—where every accountant feels seen, valued, and connected. Imagine firms where people bring their full selves to the table, supported by leaders who value courage and innovation.

Conclusion: Choose Connection in 2025

The truth is, loneliness is a timeless, human emotion. But it’s also one we have the power to address.

As 2025 begins, challenge yourself. Reach out. Share more. Lead with empathy. The connections you build will not only enrich your life but strengthen the fabric of our profession.

Don’t let another year go by feeling like you’re “on the outside.” Take the first step toward belonging—and watch how it transforms everything.
