From the 2020 reviews of W-2 and 1099 compliance systems.

W-2/1099 Filer from EG Systems is best-suited for accounting professionals that file year-end compliance forms for multiple clients. W-2/1099 Filer is an on-premise application that is designed to be installed on a desktop, workstation, or network computer, and does not currently offer online or mobile access at this time.

One of the more useful features that W-2/1099 users will appreciate are the multiple data entry options available in the application, which include interactive data entry, which mirrors the form being processed, classic entry which eliminates unnecessary details, quick entry, which uses a spreadsheet style interface, and tree entry, which offers an expanded list of options for both payers and recipients.

W-2/1099 includes electronic tax filing and magnetic media, with a bulk TIN matching feature included in the application as well. Users can choose to enter data manually or import data using Microsoft Excel, with a wizard included in the application that guides users through the import/export process.

The 2020 edition of W-2/1099 Filer includes several new features including Form 1099-NEC, which should be used to file non-employee compensation. Other new features include the addition of Form 944, an enhanced electronic transmission filing log, and enhancements to the dashboard, which was first introduced in 2019. Bulk TIN Matching was also recently added to W-2/1099, though users will need to subscribe to an e-services account in order to use it.

W-2/1099 will automatically carry forward any prior year totals, eliminating the need to re-enter data. The application is designed to use pre-printed forms, but an optional Laser Engine module is available for those that wish to print on blank paper. There’s also an option to print to a PDF, which can then be emailed to clients for in-house printing.

Forms available in W-2/1099 include the new 1099-NEC form which will be used to report non-employee compensation. Other forms supported include W2, W2C and W2G, W3, W3C and 1096 Transmittals, 1099 MISC, 1099 DIV, 1099 INT, 1099R, 1099S, 1099A, 1099B, 1099C, 1099 CAP, 1099 OID, 1099 PATR, 1099G, 3921, 1099K, 1098, 1098T, 1098E and 1098C, 1042S, 1095-C, 1095-B and 1094C / 1094-B, 5498 and Form 940, 941 and 943.  W-2/1099 supports e-filing for both federal and state forms.

EG Systems also offers numerous add-on modules including the Laser Engine, mentioned earlier, an ACA module, along with a QuickBooks import module, and a Universal import module. Users can purchase and download the application directly from the W-2/1099 website or request an optional CD-ROM which will be mailed.

A web help option is available on the EG Systems website that provides a system introduction, a quick tutorial, and a program overview, as well as detailed help regarding common system functions such as electronic filing, importing and exporting data, along with troubleshooting and tips.

Toll-free support is included in the cost of the application with extended support hours available during filing season. Users can also contact support via email if desired.

Well-suited for accounting firms that process compliance forms for a number of clients, W-2/1099 can be downloaded directly from the EG website. The 2020 version of W-2/1099 has not yet been released, but those interested can download the 2019 version to try out if desired. The basic W-2 and 1099 software program runs $119 for the first year, with a renewal fee of $89 yearly. The Laser Engine add-on module runs $40, and the ACA module is an additional $100.
