Carl Mayes, CPA, CAE – 2022 40 Under 40 Honoree

Senior Director – Audit & Accounting Quality
Association of International Certified Professional Accountants
www.aicpa.org

After starting out as an auditor in public accounting, I’ve spent the past 12 years serving the profession at the AICPA. I’ve led the Enhancing Audit Quality (EAQ) initiative since its inception, driving quality improvement in private company audits. EAQ content has been viewed over one million times and 95% of peer reviewers indicate they have seen improvement in our areas of focus. Starting in 2017, I directed CPA Evolution, an effort to transform the CPA licensure model to recognize the rapidly changing skills and competencies the practice of accounting requires. Working with AICPA and NASBA leadership, I worked to redesign the CPA license to a core + disciplines model, ultimately garnering overwhelming support from the profession and regulatory community. Finally, I oversee the AICPA Not-for-Profit Section, where we provide members with the critical insights they need to serve the not-for-profit community.

What are you doing to make a difference in the profession, your community, the world?

I am passionate about serving the CPA profession. As gatekeepers for the capital markets, we play a vitally important role in society, and supporting practicing CPAs is a privilege. Beyond working for the profession, I support the less fortunate in North Carolina, serving as treasurer for Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network (now Families Moving Forward), a homeless shelter in Durham, NC, and volunteering with various other local charitable organizations.
